Ballot Measure 27
(Genetically Engineered Foods Labeling)
It should be an obvious and fundamental right that people are
able to know what they are eating. Ballot Measure 27 allows this
by requiring that all food containing genetically engineered ingredients
be labeled as such. What kind of company would not want you to know?
Ballot Measure 27 does NOT ban such
foods. Oregon citizens would still be able to enjoy obvious medicinal
or curative benefits from genetic research. It merely allows a fundamental
right that people all over the world are asserting in rapidly growing
numbers – the right to know what’s in your food.
Opponents contend in some vague way that this will hurt the Oregon
economy. Quite the opposite is true, especially at this time. Despite
the role played by lumber and wood products and the recently expanded
high tech sector as export-based products produced by the Oregon
economy, agricultural products are by far our biggest export.
Around the world, the demand for sustainably produced products
made with known natural ingredients is growing rapidly. Demand for
the output of economies with a fundamental commitment to sustainable
economic methods promises to be the next great growth sector for
world trade. Propelled by growing concern for the environment and
pressure on world resources, the sustainable business revolution
could easily equal or surpass the information technology boom. Don’t
let us be left behind. Oregon will send a powerful message to the
world that we are open for “green business” by passing
this ballot measure.
Don’t impair Oregon’s future at a time when productive
family wage jobs are badly needed. Instead, give a strong boost
to the future competitiveness of Oregon’s economy by passing
Ballot Measure 27. Oregon agriculture and family farms need your
help!
